Ambient Extraction

Sculptural soundscape and video installation - Soundscape developed in collaboration with Aloïs Yang

Dust collected from (52.0819934, 1.5632826), sunlight in the late afternoon, a hole, multi-channel speakers (2 transducer speakers on steel tubes, 1 transducer bass shaker underneath the floor, 2 monitor speakers), TV screens, headphones, steel, steel tube, jesmonite, iron powder, resin

installation size variable
soundscape: 14min loop / Video: 7min loop

Preferably view on headphones:

Dust from multiple time-spaces fall into one
They carry noise, noise of information, and informational noise
It is invisible, and everywhere.

The form of dust is materiality in most minimal form yet still visible. Slipping between the periphery of a tactile object, but not yet falling into the micro world like the imagination of an atom, which is virtual materiality. The idea of dust can also be partly imaginative, as when it is just about to be perceived and observed through the naked human eye. It is a nearly invisible matter that is always there.

We breathe it in and out constantly.

They(🝝) have been trying to find the debris of an unrecordable noise. At that time, noise is quantifiable and defines the material that transmits it. Their extended auditory perception allows them to identify the value of noise clouds through time and space. A noise cloud is defined by the same quantity of noise and its particles stay in specific spaces throughout a time period, rather than just by a certain pattern of vibration frequency as to how we explain sound wave. Sound in an environment comes from all directions; a noise cloud is that within the volume of this cloud, the quality of noise and particles remains within a certain range. Some of them believe that, and still in search for, somewhere on the Earth, there is one and the only tiny noise cloud that remains completely silent since the beginning of the universe. Around that tiny noise cloud, sounds from all directions have been cancelled by their mirrored frequency wave.

Example of a same noise cloud in different times of a day

To find the most remote place, where sonic evidence remains untouched, undisturbed, unheard. They(🝝) end up collecting in the most controlled and regulated landscapes that are governed by authorities. In these places, leftovers of human activities are slowly re-occupied by nature. Organic and inorganic matter slowly collapsing into ash. The scientists that used to work here have signed non-disclosure agreements. No one is allowed to speak clearly on what has happened here. Their life and memory of this place are decaying; this physical place and its describable memory dissolving back to its original form.

The soundscape of that place is archived in the dust; the noise of arcane information kept in its sonic form, the form of a signal that is more experiential than informational. They(🝝) suggested that the soundscape recorded onto the surface material is an indexical recording, and without any mediation, it is therefore the most objective archive of the past.

They(🝝) are hunting for the potential information in unwanted noise, investigating forensic ambiance and extracting atmosphere from the preserved dust. Although they have not yet reached a conclusion on how to make this atmospheric evidence perceptible for human beings, they insist on preserving it for future archeological exploration who will be able to hear the present soundscape through the dust.
