Yen Chun Lin (b.1990, Taiwan) lives and works between London and Berlin. In 2019, she graduated from MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University in London. The artist works mainly with sculptural installations that are activated by immersive soundscapes and speculative science. Forming from the fascination and fears of unknown phenomena in natural environments, her works investigate ambiguities and in-betweenness that are often devalued in assumed knowledge; situated between rational science and the classification of the unexplainable, supernatural, ethereal. Vibration, in sonic and tactile terms, shape our perception of reality. By tuning into quieter soundscapes, we could connect more with surrounding environments, perhaps, also with all beings from other dimensions of realities: expanding sensory perception (listening) as a way of caring.
Previously, she investigates the potential of dust as a sonic recorder that continuously records its surrounding environment. If vibrations in the air could be imprinted onto material matter, and those indexed patterns converted into sonic information, we would be able to hear unrevealed past that is not recorded in existing forms of archives - which she calls this hypothetical knowledge as ‘ambient truth’. The type of embodied knowledge that is experiential than informational.
Sprouting from her interests in sound, dust, ambient truth, sensory threshold, consciousness field and liminal spaces, Yen recently started a research platform ‘Here, a nut falls twice’. A platform experimenting with artistic practice: how empathy could be formed collectively by listening together and co-creating a shared ‘here’ through alternation in sensual perception. She believes this emotional connection has actual impacts on the material world.
