Yen Chun Lin
Yen Chun Lin (1990, Taiwan) is an artist working mainly with sculptural installations that are activated by immersive soundscapes and speculative science. Forming from the fascination and fears of unknown phenomena in natural environments, her works investigate ambiguities that are often devalued in assumed knowledge; situated between rational science and the classification of the unexplainable, supernatural, ethereal.
“I want to look at things in-between—that space is not empty, it is not silent”. Her practice interrogates what information is “filtered out”— and how we might tune into it.
Yen Chun Lin’s research focuses on how vibration, in sonic and tactile terms, shapes our perception of the surrounding environment. especially interested in sensory perception that is just at the threshold. She considers sensual amputation of technology in modernity cause the neglect of interconnection with all the beings. Similar to radio frequencies, She believe by tuning into quieter soundscapes, we could connect more with the environment, and perhaps, even with another dimension of reality.
Previously, Yen Chun Lin investigate the potential of dust as a sonic recorder that continuously records its surrounding environment. If vibrations in the air could be imprinted onto material matter, and those indexed patterns converted into sonic information, we would be able to hear unrevealed past that is not recorded in existing forms of archives - which she calls this hypothetical knowledge as ‘ambient truth’. The type of embodied knowledge that is experiential than informational.
